  18. Cypherpunks Remailers
  19.  
  20. The Cypherpunks' remailers allow you to send anonymous mail by adding the
  21. header Request-Remailing-To: and sending to one of the addresses listed
  22. below. Most (but not all) of these remailers also accept Anon-To: in place
  23. of Request-Remailing-To.  These headers must be typed exactly as you see
  24. them; some remailers are case-sensitive.  Mail without these headers is
  25. either rejected or delivered to the remailer administrators.

  27. If you can not add the required headers, place two colons (::) on the very
  28. first line of your message, then on the next line type Request-Remailing-To:
  29. and the address you want to send anonymously to.  Skip a line, and then
  30. begin your message.  Note that by using this method it is possible to send
  31. a message consecutively thru more than one remailer.
  32. Be sure to place the double colons on the first line of the message, and
  33. skip one line following the headers.  Extra blank spaces (or forgetting to
  34. seperate the headers and message) may cause problems.  Also, keep in mind
  35. that many remailers only allow one recipient per message.

  62. You can add additional headers to your message by placing two number
  63. signs (##) at the beginning of the first line of the message body, and
  64. then add the special headers on subsequent lines.  These headers are not
  65. interpreted by the remailer software, only passed thru to the output
  66. message.  Some remailers require that you place the Subject: header in the
  67. body of the message, after the ## - The original subject line is removed.

  71. remailer@csua.berkeley.edu works slightly differently.  It includes an
  72. encrypted reply block so that people can reply to your messages.  It
  73. also requires that you use the header Anon-Send-To: to send anonymously,
  74. and features a usenet posting service.  For more information on this
  75. remailer, finger remailer@csua.berkeley.edu, or send mail to that
  76. address with the Subject: remailer-info

  78. remail@extropia.wimsey.com requires that you public-key encrypt your
  79. messages with PGP.  This added security prevents a hacker or nosey
  80. sysadmin at your site from reading your outgoing mail or finding out
  81. where it's going.  This remailer is not directly connected to the
  82. internet, so messages will be delayed about an hour.  Some of the
  83. other remailers support PGP as well.  For remailers which support
  84. both encryption and plaintext messages, identify encrypted messages
  85. by adding a header which reads:  Encrypted: PGP, either in the actual
  86. message headers, or following a double colon (see examples below)
  87. PGP keys can be found at the end of this document.

  89. Some remailers offer several additional features.
  90. Adding the header "Cutmarks:" will truncate the message starting with
  91. any line that begins with the same characters as in the Cutmarks header.
  92. This can be used to remove an automatically-inserted signature file.
  93. Also supported is the header "Latent-Time:".  This allows a message to
  94. be delayed at the remailer and sent out at a later time.  This is useful
  95. because it prevents people from correlating the times at which certain
  96. anonymous posts appear with the times that you are logged in.  For example,
  97. "Latent-Time: +06:30" would deliver the message six hours and thirty
  98. minutes after it is received.  The maximum permissible delay is 24
  99. hours.  These lines may be placed either in the message headers,
  100. or following the double colon.  For more information, send mail to
  101. one of the remailers listed above, Subject: remailer-help

  103. In addition, many remailers now support "Mixmaster" format.  Mixmaster
  104. is a program written by Lance Cottrell which splits messages into equally
  105. sized chunks and remails them seperately.  This has security advantages
  106. because a snooper can not look at the sizes of messages you send and try
  107. to compare them with anonymous messages of similar size.  For more

  113. There is an anonymous contact service at anon.penet.fi.  Users are
  114. automatically assigned an address of the form anxxxxxx@anon.penet.fi,
  115. where xxxxxx is a number, when they first send a mesaage via this
  116. remailer.  Any replies to this address are forwarded back to you.

  138. Anonymous postings to usenet can be made by sending anonymous mail to one of

  156. any such system to function as expected.  Also note that the last one
  157. requires .usenet at the end of the address.

  531. The operation of this system of remailers is a group effort which relies
  532. on the contributions of many generous people.  Please do not abuse the
  533. remailers.  If you have problems with a remailer, some of the remailer
  534. operators can be contacted by sending mail to the remailer's address
  535. without a remailing request header.  Otherwise, follow the instructions
  536. that come in the headers of messages from the remailer.  Do not send
  537. complaints to postmaster at the site, unless the remailer operator
  538. specifies that as the address to make complaints.  Many of the remailers
  539. are run by people who are not the general site administrators, and sending
  540. to the wrong address (ie postmaster@...) will most likely just delay the
  541. response, or won't get your problem resolved.

  543. Most remailers do not keep records of messages, although the sendmail
  544. daemon on unix systems may.  In general, if PGP and latency are used
  545. properly with a long chain of remailers, it would be very difficult for
  546. someone to discover your identity.  In nearly all cases, if someone's true
  547. identity is found, it is due to their own sloppiness or carelessness.
  548. Don't think this means you can get away with spamming or mailbombing.
  549. First, remailer software will often notify the operator if an abnormally
  550. high number of messages come in within a short period of time.  And if you
  551. try to spread it out over many remailers, you increase the chances that one
  552. of the remailer operators will catch you.  Remember, it is very difficult
  553. to trace one message, but a hundred will stick out like a sore thumb.
  554. The bottom line is: if you spam, expect to be caught, and don't expect
  555. anyone to be very happy about it.
